Spring Preparation For Your Car Tyres

Spring is definitely in the air and while you may be planning a spring clean or to update and refresh your home ready for the warmer weather and lighter days, it's important to give some thought to your vehicle too. An area of your vehicle that may be in need of maintenance is your tyres. It's vital that they are safe and efficient for travelling. So how can we ensure our tyres are safe?

Check Tyre Tread Depth
Many experts recommend a tread depth of 3mm to ensure your tyres are safe and efficient.Worn tyres are dangerous. In wet conditions, driving with worn tyres increases the likelihood of losing grip on the road surface and aquaplaning.

Ensure tyre pressure is checked
This should be in line with the manufacturers recommendations. If they are under or over inflated, your vehicle may lose grip on the road. Tyres with insufficient air can wear down on the outside edges prematurely. Over-inflated tyres result in a reduced area of contact with the road.

Visual checks
Take a good look at your tyres and if you see any signs of wear and tear including reduced tyre tread, damage, embedded objects or lumps and bumps then it's important to get them checked.

Tyre repairs can be a low cost alternative to buying new tyres but it's important ensure this is done correctly and so it is advisable to get your tyres checked by a technician. A tyre should not be repaired if it has an illegal tread depth, secondary damage (caused by the injuring object), faulty/ poor previous repairs, age deterioration, bead damage or exposed cords. In these instances the tyre will need to be replaced.

You can purchase tyres, seek advice and book your car in for maintenance at Calmac Tyres, a Northampton family owned and run business.

Check wheel alignment
Wheel alignment, also known as tracking, is the process of ensuring your wheels are set to their optimum position. Wheels that are not correctly aligned can cause rapid and irregular tyre damage. It is important to take your car to a garage where they can check the alignment as well as efficiently rectify the issue.

The benefits of ensuring your tyres are regularly checked and maintained include reduced running costs, longer tyre life and of course, your safety.
