With the start of each academic year comes a new set of challenges in the learning curriculum. That’s why it’s important for parents to understand their child’s curriculum as much as possible. An independent school in Hertfordshire have put together the following information to help.
The National Curriculum is split into five different Key Stages, based on your child’s age. Within each key stage, your child’s teachers will assess their progress and how they match up to national targets, based on their performance in lessons, homework and in the end of stage exams. Throughout the year, your child will explore key themes of the curriculum in their lessons, which will help them prepare for their exams.
The idea behind the national curriculum is that it provides a consistent level of education across the country to all students of the same age. This means that, no matter where in the country the child lives, they are still receiving an equal education as someone who lives in the neighbouring town and so on and so forth.
Each school will tailor their curriculum as they see fit, while sticking to the guidelines and including the core subjects; English, Maths and Science. Private schools also have more flexibility with their curriculum, but it is likely that they will take elements of the national curriculum and build upon it.
If you want to ensure your child is making their most of their experience at school, don’t be afraid to contact the school and ask for a copy of the curriculum. It might only be an outline, but it will allow you to explore the lesson topics at home and during family time, while also helping you understand what additional resources you could buy for your child. If you work together with your child’s teacher, you will be sure to help them reach their full potential.
