The Rise of Lab-Created Diamonds

If you’ve been glimpsing at engagement rings online at some point this year, you’ve probably spotted a rise in the number of lab-created diamonds. So here's the lowdown on these man-made marvels, including how they stack up against their natural counterparts - what they'll set you back if you’re looking to buy one.

Diamonds have always been the ultimate symbol of love and luxury, especially when it comes to wedding celebrations – think eye-catching engagement rings and glittering wedding jewellery.

But let's face it, diamonds' desirability is directly linked to their hefty price tags.

So what if there was a way to own a stunning diamond that's more wallet-friendly and even gentler on our planet than the traditional, earth-mined versions? Well, let’s just say we’ve some good news for you!

Are lab-created diamonds real diamonds?
In short, yes! This question often pops up, and Becky Wright from Infinity Diamond Jewellery has the answer: "Absolutely, they are real diamonds. They share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as mined diamonds and are equally hard, scoring a 10 on the Mohs scale. The only difference is their place of origin.

"With our lab-created diamond engagement rings, there’s no trade-off – you get a stunning, ethically sourced gem at a fraction of the cost of a mined diamond. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Even the diamond giant De Beers has joined the lab-grown diamond market. And when Meghan Markle, known for her style, was spotted wearing Kimai earrings made with lab-created diamonds, it signalled a significant shift towards these lab-grown gems.

Personally, we can't get enough of the stunning selection of lab-created diamond engagement rings Becky and her team have designed. Their range spans from sleek, modern designs to charming, vintage-inspired pieces.

What's more, these rings are tailor-made, allowing you to choose your ideal lab-created diamond in terms of size, colour, and clarity, and then set it in your preferred metal. And the best part? These beauties are priced up to 70% lower than their mined counterparts, offering the same brilliant shine for a fraction of the cost – a win for both your pocket and the planet. The buzz around these synthetic gems is growing, and here's what you need to know about them.

Why are lab-created diamonds more affordable?
Thanks to technological advancements, lab-created diamonds are faster and less labour-intensive to produce than mined diamonds, making them more budget-friendly.

Jack Cherry, a gemologist from Queensmith, a Hatton Garden jeweller, notes, "Lab-grown diamonds typically sell for 50-60% less than mined diamonds, offering a larger, more impressive stone for your budget."

Are lab-created diamonds more eco-friendly?
Mining for natural diamonds has raised several humanitarian and environmental concerns over the years. "Lab diamonds' ethical appeal is a major factor in their growing popularity. While over 99.8% of blood diamonds have been eliminated globally, making UK-purchased mined diamonds almost certainly conflict-free, many buyers prefer the clear, conflict-free origins of lab diamonds," explains Jack.

Environmental impacts of mining, such as habitat destruction and soil erosion, don't occur with lab-created diamonds. The Diamond Foundry claims its synthetic diamonds have a zero-carbon footprint, although the energy required for their production varies among different producers.
